How to Read Your 10-Year Luck Pillars (Daeun)

The most practical — and most misunderstood — part of a Korean Saju reading is the row of characters marching across the bottom of the chart: the luck pillars, or daeun (대운). Each pillar governs roughly ten years of your life, and together they turn a static birth chart into a moving forecast.

Where luck pillars come from

Your luck pillars are generated from your month pillar, stepping forward or backward through the sixty-character cycle. The direction depends on your birth year's polarity and your gender; the starting age comes from the distance between your birth moment and the nearest solar term, converted at the traditional rate of three days to one year. This is why two people with identical charts can still walk different roads — their decades begin at different ages and run in different directions.

What a decade means

Each luck pillar carries two characters — a stem above, a branch below — and therefore two elemental influences that overlay your birth chart for that decade. The classical reading asks: what do these elements do to my chart? A decade that supplies your scarce element tends to open doors that effort alone couldn't; a decade that doubles your dominant element amplifies both your gifts and your excesses.

This is why Saju practitioners talk about seasons rather than good and bad luck. A "winter" decade isn't a punishment — it's a consolidation period where pushing hard yields little but building foundations pays off later. Knowing which season you're in changes how you spend it.
